I TOLD YOU IT WOULD BACKFIRE: THE SURGE

Aren't people who say I told you so a pain in the butt? Well, whatever, but months back I remember writing a piece on Anbar and the surge saying that it was a trap and could end up like Custers Last Stand. Here I am, no military strategist, and even I could figure this one out.

So, within the past two weeks, Gates has announced that there will be no troop drawdown as previously promised, and not only our troops but the NATO troops are being set up for the kill. Little by little over the past two months the news has reported a bomb here, a bomb there; but it seems that noone is really paying attention - we are diverted by this goddamned Hillary and her bullshit attacks on Obama, over and over again. Shit Hillary, either drop out so the Democratic Party can unite or buy yourself a fucking record player and just play the song over and over again.

Meanwhile, this is the legacy of George Bush; (not to mention the recession, the deficit, millions losing their homes, devastation of the environment, a free ride for the wealthy and corporates, stripping the constitution, wiretapping, etc, etc, etc) he is going to leave us high and dry, totally fucked up, running around like rats trying to fix everything he screwed up and it will take years.

Now, you tell me, couldn't the Bush strategists have figured this one out, or was this all part of the plan so that people in the United States would be so freaked out by this new trend, or should I say increasing trend of violence in Iraq and Afghanistan that indeed they would vote for the 100 year war guy? Not to mention, that would certainly keep all the Bush allies and cronies, the corporates, the private contractors well oiled (pun) in huge profits as the war machine churns on. So, here's my new prediction: Along with the increased violence in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan and failure of the surge, the presidential candidates for 2008 will be McCain and Obama. Obama will be attacked and labeled as an Islamic sympathizer selling the United States down the drain.

WWWWWWWWWhat???? We've already been sold down the river, will the American people be that stupid to fall for this new scare tactic offered by the right wing fanatics? Let's hope not, but keep in mind "they" have cooled it on the orange/red alerts for awhile, maybe they were giving us a breathing spell, letting the fear wear off so they would be able to jolt us again big time. I think it's a old variation on the Pavlov dog theme, and it just might work.

NUMBER 11 PRIMARY VICTORY FOR OBAMA AND WILL KOSOVO/KOSOVA MAKE THE DEBATE TONIGHT ?

At first, I was never a Richard Gere fan. Then, slowly he grew on me. If you get a chance do see A Hunting Party (it's out on DVD) based on the true story of Serbian war criminal Radovan Karadicz. Was independence for Kosovo a good thing? I think it was, but it depends on who you are talking to, so I'm going to give you some links, a bit of history, Obamas position, lots of links today.

We were back in Chicago during the Bosnian War, and the Serbs were furious with Clinton. I know this, because Mike is Russian, and we were in the Serb and Russian neighborhoods. They were taking up collections like crazy to send money to the Serbs and I swear to you, they were more like Serbs first, Americans as an afterthought. The degree of Serbian nationalism simply shocked me.

And, if this topic does make the debate tonight,which it sure in the heck better, watch the rhetoric used by Clinton and Obama, there is a huge difference of meaning (historical) between Kosovo and Kosova. And, there is historical dispute if Kosovo really is such a sacred place to the Serbs, or just a myth made up to foster nationalism. Interesting, huh?

The truth is, I haven't been following the events in Ciudad Juarez, but then, there hasn't been alot of publicity regarding the femicides there and other developments except from non main stream media sources.

So, this was a new one on me, I didn't even realize we were supposed to be boycotting Corona Beer. Wait a minute here, wasn't there not too long back, a raid on the Corona Beer outlet in TJ for possible drug envolvement? The one that is along the fenceline going down the hill to the border. I think it envolved a tunnel or something, I'll have to check on that.

"THEY'RE PICKING EM UP":ROSARITO BEACH UPDATE

Heh guys, hope everyone had a nice Valentine's Day and are enjoying a long weekend. I have some good news about Rosarito Beach, what a shocker. We have a friend who has a business in town, and his business is not tourist related. So, what I am about to tell you is from a Mexican national's perspective, and not tourist related hype just to get you back down here.

According to our friend, who has always been reliable with insights and information in the past, he says he feels much safer in Rosarito Beach now that the Army and Federal Police have been in control. He admits he was worried before. From his business, which is on the main street, he and his employees said that they have watched the Army constantly swoop up the bad guys.

In his words,"...we see the Army trucks driving by, they go away and then they come back and they have a bunch of criminals in the trucks..this happens regularly. They have intelligence people out there putting the pieces together until they can go after someone."

Then we asked him about the possible corruption of the Army by the Cartels, a story which had been frontlined in the Union Tribune. He said: "...Army personnel would not risk getting envolved with the Cartels, because if they were caught, their life is over." I didn't understand what he meant by that, so I asked him and he explained:"...the Army is a sacred trust, and if you breech this trust, it is comparable to treason or espionage, breaking that kind of a law is about as serious as it gets."

We asked him about the General who was envolved with the Cartels several years back, and he said,"...they locked him up and he is going to die in prison, and that is what happens."

The jist of what he was saying was he feels safer with the Army in Rosarito Beach and that he feels they are going to clean things up.

Okay, well that's good news, I'm still skeptical, but we have to keep in mind that the Mexican system works differently than ours.

Meanwhile, there was a bomb explosion in Mexico City, and it is not clear whether this was from a nut or the Cartels or something else.

Heh guys, I just got up from a nap. I had to run a neighbor down to Ensenada this afternoon, and we did not see any extra patrols along Hwy.1. Speaking of Mexico, I've been hanging out a little bit over at the Union Trib, the reporters there have come up with a couple of very good stories in the past few days. I just wish that someone would do a story on the FARC influence in Mexico, I found one article in El Universal and I'm nosing around, maybe I can come up with something, because it seems to me that the same tactics used by FARC are being used here in Baja. And I don't like FARC much, despite their so-called socialist appeal, they are a bunch of fascists. Seem far fetched?

I've noticed alot of Mex haters over on the forum at Sign On San Diego, and others with good perspectives, or at least realistic perspectives. Maybe I haven't been there long enough, but it seems to me that the pure anti-Mexican, anti-immigrant group have totally missed the whole picture of why we are having such a problem with immigration in the first place; and I wish they could read this article I'm about to
post for you and I wish there could be some rational discourse on this issue and the issue of legalization of drugs - because until these issues are addressed, it is not going to get better here or in the States, not at all. Infact, it's going to get worse. And if anyone tells you it's going to get better, they are full of shit.

Last week, as you know, a high ranking police chief was arrested in Rosarito, and in his home they found weapons and extra uniforms.(If you are not familiar with the story, we have had several highjackings and kidnappings and shakedowns and assaults by men dressed in police uniforms) This was such a nonsensical deal really, because as you know, the Rosarito cops have been scrutinized for the past almost three weeks,their weapons taken away from them and Rosarito is now occupied by the Army and PDF. As I commented on the SOS forum, it made no sense that this guy didn't dump the evidence, KNOWING he was under scrutiny. Unless he was incredibly stupid.

So, if you didn't catch it when it was released, this is a sleeper and a must see, I absolutely loved it - great story, 5 star acting, moves at a good clip, and mesmorizing. And, of course, it totally reinforced our dream to move to Cayucos when hubbie retires and get the hell outa here.
