Through NAFTA's slave labor with no guarantees for human or environmental rights, and our government's inability to effectively compel the Mexican Government to care for its own people, and blindly looking the other way while USA companies, big and small hire illegal immigrants under the table, and by simply not legalizing drugs and creating treatment centers, eliminating the criminal cartels, we have become an enabler of the present date immigration problem.
Living in Mexico, we must obey their laws, we must have FM3 status, we pay property taxes both local and federal. And yet we have no right to vote, we would be escorted out of this country if we became envolved in anything here political. There is no such thing as assimilation here, this is a tribal society. The gringos are simply the goose that laid the golden egg, that's all, no more, no less.
I firmly believe the United States is being drained, our health care system in particular, by illegal immigrants. I do not believe that anyone has a right to slip across the border without the legal papers, work, send billions home to Mexico, not pay taxes.
It is way past time for the Mexican people to change their own system, to finally make their country work for them. Afterall, we see at these immigration rallies the sense of nationalism, the flying of the Mexican flag over and over again. Bullshit. If they love their flag so much, then fly it in Mexico and fight for what it is supposed to stand for, in Mexico. Just the same as our forefathers fought for what the American flag stands for in America. "Ni modo" is just plain bullshit and lazy. Period. What if our parents just said, "Oh, ni modo", as Hitler danced across Europe? What if our grandparents had said, "Oh, ni modo", instead of standing up against all odds and creating unions and safe working conditions for themselves and future generations? What if our generation just said, "Oh, ni modo", instead of getting our skulls beaten in as we demonstrated against the Vietnam War and changed the course of history? What if Martin Luther King just said "Oh, ni modo", instead of working for civil rights? Martin, and I might add, thousands of dedicated others. What if grassroots groups of people in the United States just said, "Oh, ni modo", instead of working and changing and implementing environmental laws and regulations? What if thousands and thousands of women just said, "Oh, ni modo", instead or working and changing and implementing women's rights? And that's JUST the tip of the iceberg.
So, I guess if we had all said,"Oh, ni modo", we would be just like Mexico.
Having said that, there is as I can see it, still no excuse for the overreaction of the Los Angeles Police Department to the Immigration Rally a few days ago. And, you know what, good thing for these demonstrators, that since we are not a nation of ni-modians, most likely heads will roll and there will be an investigation, someone will pay, and I doubt the Los Angeles Police Department will react as they did if the opportunity presents itself again. And you know what else, if I demonstrated down here and had rubber bullets shot at me, the general Mexican population would just sigh, and say, "Oh, ni modo." Poor Zapata, he is turning in his grave, and has been doing so for quite some time now.
